Wonk actually means a nerd (Merriam-Webster 1993). In recent years its original meaning has been corrupted, or expanded, so that now it usually means specialist or expert. "I'm an energy wonk," in current usage means I know a lot about energy issues, not that I'm an asocial intellectual with energy to spare.
