Word Pirates
Click on the word for comments

A web site being increasingly misused to groan about slang ("way"), or cleverly point out how ignorant "those people" can be ("you're"), in my opinion. I'm not suggesting removing off-topic postings, but perhaps the system could be modified so readers like me could filter them out. Maybe a points-based rating system would work?

Pirated word:
Work/Life Balance
Click on the word for comments

This word implies an appropriate balance between work and life, when described by an employer. However, we know the truer meaning of today - that there is a balance, just one crazy-out-of-whack balance towards work.

way (preposition)
Click on the word for comments

"Way" in this sense means "far," as in "way beyond/far beyond." It does NOT mean "very." Therefore, idiocies like "way cool" are wrong, though probably not so much piracies as just illiteracy. Using "way" as a substitute for "far" allows the following usages... way out way over way above ...but NOT anything like: way high way fast way chic

A poor grammatical combination of words that is commonly used in law enforcement and legal reporting. Why not just say, "Since they disappeared" rather than, “They went missing”?

Pirated word:
weopons of mass destruction
Click on the word for comments

A box of gelignite can be a weopon of mass destruction if correctly applied. This phrase is now used for the Bush administration to hide behind to justify the war on countries that it decides to invade. It makes the supposed enemy seem more sinister.

wetness
Click on the word for comments

I don't like that wetness means the amount of pee in a diaper that either leaks out or is absorbed. I'm not even sure wetness is a word. It is wet, it is dry, it is soaked, sopping, moist, slick, soggy... No one says that something has a high degree of wetness. Only diaper commercials and deoderant ads use that word. Even porn doesn't use the word wetness.

wonk
Click on the word for comments

Wonk actually means a nerd (Merriam-Webster 1993). In recent years its original meaning has been corrupted, or expanded, so that now it usually means specialist or expert. "I'm an energy wonk," in current usage means I know a lot about energy issues, not that I'm an asocial intellectual with energy to spare.
