Spin doctor
I believe the phrase originally referred to a player of pool, or snooker, or billiards, or some similar game, who was particularly adept at making use of spin on the ball to achieve their desired shot. Now, of course, it's in daily use as a replacement for PR (Public Relations) official. Pointless and ugly.
