protect
To protect something means that you will keep it from coming to harm. Insurance companies claim to "protect" your belongings. However, they only pay if your person or belongings are damaged (if they pay at all). Also, they take (ever increasing) amounts of your property$ away (and without choice e.g. car insurance) despite not having need for their "protection."
