parameter
Means a (numerical) characteristic or controlling number. (the speed of a dropped stone is g*t, where t is the time since it was dropped, and g is a *parameter* dependant on the units of time and distance, and on the force of gravity). But 'parameter' is now used as a persiflaginous sesquipedalian substitute for 'limit'.
