'Outrageous' is one of those words trampled to death by marketers. Where once it denoted something that was apt to deeply unsettle or offend (that is, outrage) a person, group or community, it's now applied to everything from soda flavors to lipstick tints... a synonym, it seems, for 'pleasant,' 'unusual,' or simply 'appealing,' and used particularly when the object described is, in fact, rather dull.
