healthy forests
The Bush administration and friends in the timber industry have hijakced/pirated the word "healthy forest" to support their idea that logging makes a forest healthy. They say that killing trees leaves the remaining trees mor ehealthy but they are ignoring several important facts. (1) There is life in dead trees. Lots of birds nest in the hollow trucks of dead and dying trees. A healthy forest includes lots of unhealthy trees. (2) Removing large trees opens up the canopy and allows light and wind to dry out the forest floor making it more susceptible to fire and could even stimulate the growth of brush (also known as "ladder fuels") that could carry fire from the ground to the crowns of the trees.
