Way back when Ted Turner was boss at CNN, he was reputed to have banished "foreign" from CNN's news. He reasoned that foreign was like alien, it referred to something that didn't belong where it was, e.g., a foreign body in my eye. He figured that the world was too small a place for a human being to be foreign anywhere on it. CNN replaced it with "international," or something more specific, like "European" or "Australian."
