clan, a group of persons of common ancestry or even a group of things related by common characteristics. Family can now be anybody gathered one time with very little or almost nothing in common. Example: A radio announcer saying "Our family of listeners". In that case we don't even know who each other are, especially if you just tuned in to get the sports scores and are not a regular listener.
