facts of the matter
This phrase is pointless. It means "facts". It's yet another attempt to add pointless filler fluff words to make the speaker seem more intelligent (I first heard it from politicians)... The facts of the matter are that the entire phrase is mindless filler. The facts are that the entire phrase can be reduced to one word... Which is already in the phrase. Just STOP IT PLEASE!!!
