The "epicenter" of an earthquake is the point *on the surface* of the earth directly above the "hypocenter", the location below the surface of the earth where the earthquake actually happened. "Epicenter" is now being used to refer to primary location of some activity, such as "Silicon Valley is the epicenter of the computer industry."
