I'm sick of hearing people begin a prayer with "Dear God" as if they are writing a letter. I expect the next sentence to be "How are you?" submitted by
Pirated word: Decimate(d)
Click on the word for comments
This was originally roman - it means kill every tenth man. Deca being ten. Now used to describe very heavy losses - incorrect! submitted by Roger Meeking
Pirated word: Decimated

This word means to reduce by one-tenth. Often used to indicate a reduction of any number. submitted by
Pirated word: Democracy
Click on the word for comments
"Democracy" is defined, according to Chambers, as "a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people collectively, and is administered by them or by officers appointed by them."
It is pirated to mean a "pseudo-democratically elected temporary dictatorship" where once a vote is conned out of voters via deception, lies and empty promises, the newly empowered body then sets about implementing it's own agenda, and those of it's corporate sponsors and partners [see "Fascism"] via deceit of those it falsely claims to represent. It continues thusly until the subsequent election whereupon bribery, via tax-cuts, is commonly used to further the temporary misuse of power; a succession of con-tricks and deceptions and abuse of power, so long as once there was a "vote" involved. submitted by
Pirated word: Democrat

With a capital D, denoting something rather far from little-d democracy--more like "the best democracy money can buy". See also "Republican". submitted by Ross Knight
Pirated word: Designer
Click on the word for comments
Many things [paint, clothing, etc] are described as coming in "designer colors". WTF does that mean? What makes one shade of green "designer" and another just "green"? Maybe in the dim past there was some actual meaning there, but now it's just marketing cruft. Every color is a designer color, because a designer of some type has to make the decision about which color to use in any context. submitted by Chaz Larson
Pirated word: Dirty

Just heard Frank DeFord on NPR this morning in a curmudgeon persona, making quite a few good points including how "physical" seems to have replaced "dirty" in sports announcing, as in: "Boy, this game is really physical!" submitted by Jerry
Pirated word: Disabled Persons
Click on the word for comments
They really mean 'Disabled People' but that's too personal so the impersonal 'Persons' was adopted. In my view this is offensive - people are people so disabled people should be called disabled people. submitted by Robin Nixon

Sorry, although you've done a great job, because of economic presures we are downsizing your position. Really means: The greedy people who own this company don't appreciate you worth a crap and your being fired so they can take the money and spend it on themselves. Too bad, so sad you poor sap. Pirated word: decadent
Click on the word for comments
decadent means sinful. A delicous dessert, no matter how chocolatey and tasty, is not implicitly decadent.
(I suppose if it were in gluttonous portions, it might be decadent, but that's not how it's used. These days, people seem to think it's a synonym for "delicous".) submitted by David Small
Pirated word: decimate
Click on the word for comments
the word really means 'to kill one-tenth of'. Decimation was used as a punishment in the Roman Legions (you know how they loved powers of ten). Now, because it sounds so cool, people, lead by idiot broadcasters use it to mean to destroy a large portion of. submitted by Will

The word means that there are consequences. The guy on death row presumably derves to be executed. The person who studies like mad presumably deserves a good grade But in the AD bizz, everybody is wonderfull and deserves wonderful things: You deserve a break today! Pirated word: diet
Click on the word for comments
In modern adjectival form, "diet" attempts to convey a sense of healthiness, self-restraint or corrective action, particularly when applied to commercial food products. In fact products so labeled are likely either to have no actual health benefit or to promote different yet equally (or more) unhealthy eating habits. submitted by Ross Knights

dis, disrespect. Now wrongly being used as a verb.
Proper usage: John behaved disrespectfully towards his parents. John showed disrespect for his parents.
Ignorant usage: John dissed his parents. submitted by
Pirated word: discriminate
Click on the word for comments
To discriminate simply means to choose. The word by itself has absolutely nothing to do with race, creed, religion, etc. Nowadays "to discriminate" means to harbor and act on prejudices against others. submitted by BY
Pirated word: disrespect
Click on the word for comments
This is not a verb. You can't disrespect someone. But you can be disrespectful to them. This word is used incorrectly in popular culture. submitted by
Pirated word: distinterested
Click on the word for comments
People say distinterested when they mean uninterested. A person is uninterested in someone's boring story. Disinterest is what a judge has during a trial--he is presumably not uninterrested in the testimony, but he maintains objectivity (disinterest). submitted by tomx
Pirated word: diva
Click on the word for comments
Should refer to a distinguished female singer, usually in the world of opera. Now every two-bit music writer uses it to describe any female singer no matter how dubious her vocal ability. We now even have the label "pop-diva" which is surely some kind of oxymoron. submitted by Bully
Pirated word: diversity
Click on the word for comments
Pirated to bludgeon us into accepting a lowering of standards, especially moral standards. That which is done in the name of diversity is good, ipso facto. So what, if it turns out that Michael Jackson IS a pedophile? That just means he loves children. What's wrong with that? After all, pedophiles need love, too. Our society needs to be more open and to find ways to accommodate and accept pedophiles' diverse views. Instead of calling them child molesters, we should call them what they are: child lovers. Oh, the humanity. submitted by machiavellean
