Many companies and real estate developers use this as an exalted synonym for something as banal as "users of a particular product" or "neighborhood" (as in "gated-community"). But merely using the same product or living in the same locale does not guarantee, and seldom produces, the warmth and human friendship suggested by the more general understanding of the word "community." After all, even a jail is a "gated community."
